What We Do

Phonewire is a business phone system installer. We design, install, and support PBX and IP telephony systems for small and mid-sized businesses — from single-office practices to multi-site deployments across the United States. We work directly with the people who will use the system, not through layers of account managers and outsourced queues.

We’re a different category than most of what comes up when you search for “business phone system.”

National carriers sell you a service and walk away. Cloud-only VoIP vendors — RingCentral, Nextiva, 8×8, Dialpad — give you a login and a web dashboard, then route you to an offshore queue when something breaks. Both can be the right fit for some businesses. Neither can send a person to your office when a handset won’t register, a paging zone is dead, or the network closet needs to be rewired after a renovation.

Our Story

Phonewire was founded in 1998 by Matt Rygelski in St. Louis, Missouri. What started as a telecommunications consulting practice has grown into a full-service business phone system company serving thousands of clients across the United States — from solo practitioners to multi-location enterprises and non-profits.

The company was built on a simple belief: that small and medium-sized businesses deserve the same quality of telecommunications infrastructure that large enterprises take for granted, delivered by people who understand your business and pick up when you call. Twenty-five years of deployments across healthcare, education, law, manufacturing, hospitality, and property management have only reinforced that belief.

We’re a small company — like most of the businesses we serve. That’s not a limitation. Matt started his professional career as a telecommunications solutions consultant and software engineer. In the 1990s, he served in product management roles for various startup companies, later leading consulting engagements on product development projects, corporate and government voice network installations, and management of an international human resources outsourcing relationship.

As the founder of Phonewire, Matt brings over two decades of expertise in designing, installing, and maintaining advanced business communications systems. A recognized specialist in PBX and IP telephony platforms, he has personally led hundreds of successful deployments for clients ranging from small businesses and non-profits to multi-site enterprises. He’s the person most clients first meet, and for many of them, he’s still the person who answers when they call years later.

Matt has been featured on CNBC as a telecommunications innovator. He is also a technology writer, public speaker, and mentor — regularly called on by industry peers and business publications to explain where the business phone market is going and what small and mid-sized companies should do about it.

Her financial discipline and training standards have been central to the company’s long-term growth and operational stability — the steady hand that has kept Phonewire’s pricing predictable and its support promise intact through 25 years of industry turbulence.

Kelly leads the development of the financial systems and internal processes that allow Phonewire to deliver consistent, high-quality service at scale — while maintaining the personal client relationships that have defined the company since 1998. If the trucks are running on time, if the techs have what they need, and if the quote you got three months ago is still the quote you’re paying today, Kelly is the reason.

Her background as an educator brings an additional discipline to the company: a commitment to training — both for the Phonewire team and for the clients whose staff we onboard during every installation. Every new client gets properly trained because Kelly built that expectation into the company from the beginning.

Prior to his current role, he served as Regional Finance Director for the Republican National Party and as Finance Director for the Republican Party of Florida, bringing extensive experience in organizational management, multi-state operations, and running complex campaigns with tight timelines and tighter accountability.

That operational background translates directly to what John brings to Phonewire’s partner network: the ability to coordinate installations across multiple markets, manage the moving parts of multi-site deployments, and keep every stakeholder informed without dropping a detail. Clients with locations across multiple states often end up working with John on the logistics side of their rollout.

John has been training in the martial arts since 1979 and holds the rank of Renshi in Karate — a title meaning “polished instructor,” indicating a master who has refined their expertise to the level of teaching others. Jim brings 27 years of hands-on technician experience to Phonewire deployments, with particular expertise coordinating installations where an in-house IT team is involved in the design and cutover process. That combination of field experience and IT-fluency makes him a go-to resource for larger or more complex projects — the ones where the network closet is full, the VLANs are already documented, and the client’s IT lead wants to talk to someone who actually understands both sides.

When a Phonewire project needs real coordination between installers and an internal IT team — configuring switches, setting up QoS, troubleshooting SIP trunking on a firewall, or planning a cutover that has to happen during a four-hour maintenance window on a Saturday night — Jim makes it happen. He has been doing this work for longer than most of the cloud-VoIP companies have existed.

Outside of work, Jim has spent years volunteering with children as President of Upper Moreland Hoops, where he also served as travel director and head coach for 15 years — a commitment to building something sustainable with kids that mirrors the way he approaches his professional work.

Do you only serve the St. Louis area?
No. We serve clients across the United States. Our local technician network gives St. Louis metro clients same-day and next-day on-site response, and we deploy and support systems remotely — and on-site as needed — for clients nationwide. How is Phonewire different from RingCentral, Nextiva, or other cloud VoIP providers?
Cloud-only VoIP providers sell you a login and route support through offshore queues. We install your phone system, train your team in person, and send a technician when something needs hands-on attention. We also sell and support cloud-based systems when that’s the right fit — the difference is that we implement and stand behind the system either way, rather than handing you a dashboard and disappearing.
Do you install phone systems, or just sell the equipment?
We install, configure, and maintain the systems we sell. Every deployment includes site survey, cabling as needed, full configuration, on-site training, and ongoing support. We are a full-service installer, not a reseller.
What phone system platforms do you install and support?
We install and support business phone systems from Panasonic, Poly by HP, Snom by VTech, and Yealink, along with PBX and IP telephony systems from a range of manufacturers. We also support legacy systems from vendors whose dealer networks have shut down — including Avaya, NEC, Nortel, and Panasonic.

Our average initial response time on support calls is under one minute, answered by U.S.-based staff who know the systems we’ve deployed. For on-site issues in the St. Louis metro, we typically dispatch within the same business day.
